WEEKLY NEWS REPORT FOR 27-06-2025

As always, we're continuously on the hunt for your stories and reports, so get those race reports and photographs in to ultramag@autra.asn.au with the following information: 

  • Word document, single spaced
  • Include the name of the event, the date and the location anywhere in the report (just a bullet point at the top is great)
  • Please attach photographs to the email – do not put images in the body of your Word doc. You’ll just get me emailing you back asking for the photos sent in the correct way!
  • As many photos as possible. With our new website, it’s now easier than ever to include a nice gallery in each race report
  • No PDFs please

And remember, it doesn’t have to be about an AUTRA-listed event specifically! You just have to be an AUTRA member for the 2025 year. Also too, if you’ve run in a non-AUTRA listed event anywhere on home soil or internationally, we’d love to include your race results and experience in our Member Updates, so please do reach out to us via email to kate.dzienis@autra.asn.au

Dead Cow Gully, Qld

Dead Cow Gully Backyard Ultra was held from Saturday, 21 June and continued until there was just one runner left standing, that day being Thursday, 26 June 2025.

This year’s LOS was AUTRA’s Phil Gore, who secured himself 119 laps or a total of 798km – this being a new World Record in the backyard format.

The Assist for the 2025 edition was New Zealand’s Sam Harvey.

Congratulations also to AUTRA’s Holly Ranson, who secured a new Australian record as the last woman standing, completing a total of 62 loops.

We will provide a list of all our AUTRA members once results are made available.

Cape2Cape, WA

The inaugural Cape2Cape Ultra Marathon kicked off last weekend on Saturday, 21 June 2025 and offered distances of 100mi (33 finishers) and 50mi (31 finishers) from Augusta to Eagle Bay in WA.

In the Women’s 100mi, AUTRA’s Jen Millum secured top spot with a finish time of 25:33:22, and AUTRA member Melissa Robertson took 2nd Female position with a time of 26:26:37. Katy Anderson claimed 3rd with 27:50:52.

In the Men’s 100mi, podium positions went to Ethan Stirrat (10:18:32), Matthew Maberly (23:14:15) and Peter Butler (25:42:47).

Congratulations to all our members who completed the 100mi including Matthew Salinovich (28:23:48), Kevin Matthews (28:23:48), Glen Smetherham (28:23:48), Andy Thompson (28:23:48), Jagpawan Singh Dhillon (29:50:01) and David Martin (31:16:27).

In the Women’s 50mi, 1st Female was awarded to AUTRA’s very own Ahnika Lennie, who finished the distance in a great time of 11:54:00. Second and 3rd Female spots went to Jaymee-Lee Quarmby (13:04:39) and Jess Krempp (15:24:16).

For the Men’s 50mi, podium finishes went to Jess King (10:58:11), Paddy Millington (11:11:11) and Daniel Mackerill (12:20:39).

Congratulations to all our members for their efforts in the 50mi, including Harmony Waite (17:22:05), Jutta Kober (17:22:06) and Aaron Young (18:03:22).

Heaven & Hell Runningworks Trail Marathon, WA

The inaugural Heaven & Hell Runningworks Trail Marathon was held on Sunday, 22 June 2025 in Kelmscott, WA with options for a 10km or 6km run, a half marathon, and a MICO Marathon.

It was a tough and challenging event with the marathon having more than 2500m of elevation.

In the Women’s Marathon, top spots went to Petra Jerejian (3:48:37), Julie Gibson (4:46:11) and AUTRA’s Beck Hefferon who took 3rd Female with a finish time of 4:47:41.

In the Men’s Marathon, winners were named Mitchell Clarke (3:48:52), Dominic Mattes (4:20:01) and Sam Gliddon (4:20:02).

For the Women’s Half Marathon event, 1st Female was awarded to AUTRA member Claudia Seke who secured the position with a brilliant 2:06:10. Second Female went to Jessica Smith (Time Not Listed), whilst 3rd Female went to Caroline Fenton (Time Not Listed).

In the Men’s Half Marathon, podium spots went to Luke Munro (1:54:57), Mark Waller (2:03:22) and Brian Madigan (2:07:37).

Women’s 10km winners were Jodie Evans (57:50), Georgie Smith (1:00:02) and Alicia Cawood (1:00:09) and Men’s 10km winners were Kalen Bennet (47:57), Nick Golding (54:47) and Tony Pfaff (55:10).

Women’s 6km winners were Jill O’Brien (42:42), Liane Martyn (50:33) and Alexa Glovac (51:13) and Men’s 6km winners were Levi Quinton (30:10), Alek Narozny (33:49) and Gabriel Timar (42:41).

Backyard Ultra Trial Series – Shepparton, Vic

North-Vic Backyard Ultra’s Backyard Ultra Trial Series – Shepparaton was held in Vic on Sunday, 22 June 2025.

The top finishers for the Women were Maddi Vick (5:16:44), Sarah Peters (5:34:37) and Hilary Grigg (5:35:27).

Top finishers for the Men were named Brian Argus (5:24:27), Kelvin Peters (6:29:39) and Buddy Dempsey.

Location : Bangkok, Thailand Dates : November 21 - 24 2025 Role Type : Volunteer Position Time Commitment : Pre event planning + Travel Application Deadline : 17th September 2025 Thank you for your interest in supporting the Australian team for the 2025 IAU Asian 100k Championships. This role goes far beyond logistics. It’s about leadership, inclusion, and creating a positive, empowering environment for athletes competing on the world stage. AUTRA is committed to opening doors for those outside traditional pathways. We strongly encourage applications from coaches, former athletes, club leaders, volunteers, and passionate community members. You don’t need to have served on a board or managed a team before as we’re looking for people who genuinely care, are highly organised, and can proudly represent our athletes and country. Role Overview As Team Manager, you’ll work closely with AUTRA President Gary Mullins and Vice President Geoff Russell to prepare and support the national team before and during the championship. Pre-Departure Australia Act as the main contact for selected athletes and crew Assist with final entry forms and travel planning Prepare a Championships Agenda in alliance with the Team Managers Agreement Document Coordinate flights, uniforms, and team communications Help identify and organise crew support Attend online team planning meetings On the Ground in Thailand Be present and ready as athletes arrive Ensure all athlete needs are met so they can focus fully on their race Attend all technical meetings and represent the team professionally Coordinate team attendance at the opening and closing ceremonies Ensure the team and crew are prepared, organised, and calm Address any issues that arise with efficiency and discretion Provide hands on leadership and moral support throughout the race Support Provided Accommodation in Bangkok for 3 - 4 nights will be provided by AUTRA An official team uniform will be supplied A volunteer allowance of $1500 will be provided to acknowledge your time and service during the championship period.
