WEEKLY NEWS REPORT FOR 24-06-2024

As always, we're continuously on the hunt for your stories and reports, so get those race reports and photographs in to ultramag@aura.asn.au with the following information: 

  • Word document, single spaced
  • Include the name of the event, the date and the location anywhere in the report (just a bullet point at the top is great)
  • Please attach photographs to the email – do not put images in the body of your Word doc. You’ll just get me emailing you back asking for the photos sent in the correct way!
  • As many photos as possible. With our new website, it’s now easier than ever to include a nice gallery in each race report
  • No PDFs please

And remember, it doesn’t have to be about an AURA-listed event specifically! You just have to be an AURA member for the 2024 year. Also too, if you’ve run in a non-AURA listed event anywhere on home soil or internationally, we’d love to include your race results and experience in our Member Updates, so please do reach out to us via email to kate.dzienis@aura.asn.au

ADELAIDE 24 HOUR FESTIVAL (SA)

The Adelaide 24 Hour Festival was held the weekend of 8 June 2024 in North Adelaide, SA and provided a number of timed events, including the 24hr (22 finishers), 12hr (8 finishers), 6hr (4 finishers) and 3hr (5 finishers).

In the Men’s 24hr, 1st Male was named Rhys Whiting with 203.119km whilst Peter Doggett was 2nd Male with 200.985km. AURA’s Darren Linney from Paradise, SA who completed 199.268km was named 3rd Male, what an effort!

In the Women’s 24hr, Yuko Sato took 1st Female with 192.986km, whilst AURA's Nancy Williams from Blackwood, SA took 2nd Female with a total distance of 173.635km. Kirsty Wilson won 3rd Female with 136.597km.

Congratulations to all our members who ran in the 24hr including Anthony Parfilo (187.030km), Justin Brock (180.235km), David Billett (163.559km), Cheryl Symons (105.600km), Stephan Kent (99km), Melissa Knowles (72.627km) and Benjamin Anchor (55km).

In the Men’s 12hr, top spots went to Kevin Thomson (86.131km), Justin Halejko (85.143km) and Matthew Rees (84.764km) whilst in the Women’s 12hr winners were named Aovana Timmerman (81.979km), Marie Heitz (79.551km) and Linh Tran (53.766km).

There was a total of 4 finishers in the 6hr.

In the Men’s 6hr, 1st Male went to Wayne Calvert (70.735km) whilst 2nd Male was won by Phillipp Rohlfshagen (54.611km). AURA’s Colin Brooks from Semaphore Park, SA took 3rd Male with 47.289km.

In the Women’s 6hr, the winner was named Erika MacDonald with 50.447

ULTRA PERTH (WA)

Ultra Perth was held on Saturday, 8 June 2024 offering participants a 50km and half marathon along the water’s edge of the Canning and Swan rivers in Perth, WA. Known to be a flat and fast course, runners get an opportunity to see the inner city suburbs from a whole different view, taking in sites like the Matagarup Bridge, Optus Stadium Precinct, Elizabeth Quay and Kings Park.

Runners go from Bayswater all the way through to the finish on the South Perth foreshore with Perth city in the background, with 88 Men and 34 Women finishing in the 50km event.

In the Men’s 50km, winners were named Karlos Aquino (3:27:13), Jon Beck (3:35:19) and Rocky Ajdukovic (3:47:22); in the Women’s 50km, top spots were awarded to Lauren French (3:33:25), Stephanie Lill (4:02:58) and Shelly Hughes (4:18:01).

Congratulations to AURA members Jason Simpson from Nedlands who finished the 50km in a time of 6:15:09 and Harmony Waite from The Vines who completed the distance in 6:44:22.

In the Men’s 21.1km top spots went to Jonathan Sammut (1:12:57), Nick Thompson (1:14:42) and Andre Pienaar (1:21:21) while in the Women’s 21.1km, winners were named Lauren Hyde-Cooling (1:22:12), Isabella Rossler (1:32:26) and Kylie Macdonald (1:45:12).

RED DIRT BACKYARD ULTRA (WA)

The Red Dirt Backyard Ultra, hosted by the Pilbara Trailblazers, was held on Saturday, 15 June 2024 at Balmoral Road Caravan Park in Karratha, WA – real red dirt country. As a last one standing event, we all know the rules by now…runners keep on running until there’s only person left!

AURA’s Phil Gore from Darling Downs took the title, having completed 33 laps (~221km), and the Assist was awarded to Jamie Oborne with 32 laps.   

A big congratulations to AURA member Nicola Walters from Broome who finished a total of 7 laps.

WILD DOG BACKYARD ULTRA (VIC)

This past weekend we saw Ultra Series Australia host the first ever Wild Dog Backyard Ultra in Warragul, Vic from 21-23 June 2024, and what a success it was! With AURA’s very own Margie Hadley from Henley Brook, WA taking the crown of LOS with a total of 45 laps (301.95km). Barry Keem took the title of Assist with 44 laps (295.24km).

Congratulations to all our AURA members who raced at the inaugural Wild Dog Backyard Ultra, including David Patterson with 36 laps (241.56km), Jen Millum with 35 laps (234.85km and 2nd Best Female), Kirsty Ferguson with 33 laps (221.43km and 3rd Best Female), Kevin Muller with 32 laps (214.72km), John Yoon with 31 laps (208.01km), Chris Dixon with 30 laps (201.30km), Liv Compton with 25 laps (167.75km), Sally Theobold with 17 laps (114.07km), Robert Howse with 15 laps (100.65km), Ryan Claxton with 15 laps (100.65km), Rebecca Cowie with 13 laps (87.23km), Tony O’Connell with 12 laps (80.52km), Glen Morris with 11 laps (73.81km), Oliver Maass with 10 laps (67.10km) and Jim Taylor with 8 laps (53.68km).

transcend ultra (wa)

The Transcend Ultra was held this past weekend in WA, offering runners a 65km ultra or a 4km hike from Walyunga all the way through to Toodyay in the north-eastern hills suburbs.

In the Women’s 65km, Erika Lori took 1st Female with 6:46:53 whilst AURA’s Claire O’Brien-Smith from Swanbourne, WA claimed 2nd Female with a brilliant time of 7:37:27. Ariarn Huston took 3rd Female with 8:15:00.

In the Men’s 65km, podium finishes were awarded to Piotr Babis (6:19:59), Dale Zabiela (6:28:29) and Nicholas Bamford (6:36:10).

Well done to all our members who raced in the 65km Solo including Mitchell Crook (8:00:21), Robert Parsons (8:04:41), Jessica Smith (8:44:11), Claudia Seke (8:49:54), David Murphy (8:52:43), Phoebe Hurliman (9:22:21), Andy Thompson (10:33:31), Jutta Kober (12:15:52), Matthew Lambert (12:31:12) and Del Thompson (12:40:30).

This role goes far beyond logistics. It’s about leadership, inclusion, and creating a positive, empowering environment for athletes competing on the world stage. AUTRA is committed to opening doors for those outside traditional pathways. We strongly encourage applications from coaches, former athletes, club leaders, volunteers, and passionate community members. You don’t need to have served on a board or managed a team before as we’re looking for people who genuinely care, are highly organised, and can proudly represent our athletes and country. Role Overview As Team Manager, you’ll work closely with AUTRA President Gary Mullins and Vice President Geoff Russell to prepare and support the national team before and during the championship.
