LEWINSKI TAKES THE WIN AT LAUNCESTON 100K

On a clear and still Launceston, Tas morning an enthusiastic group of runners lined up outside Aurora stadium for the inaugural Ultrain Launceston 100.

The mood was light and the atmosphere relaxed as runners began the nine-and-a-bit laps of the race. It was fantastic to see so many familiar faces from Sole Mates running group in Hobart and meeting some new runners on the start line.

I had the intention of going out slowly and enjoying the day with the goal of finishing with a smile on my face. John Cannell took off leading the way a mere fortnight after running 199km in NSW. The runis centred on the North Esk precinct, taking in the trails of Heritage Forest and the river foreshore. The Tamar River was beautifully still and the conditions were perfect.

The first few laps I was feeling great running with friends and enjoying the conversation and scenery, as well as trying to remember the course. At about the 40km mark I caught up with John, and being the stalwart that he is, I asked for any advice.

“Just look after your body and enjoy it,” he said.

So I listened. Every lap I took the time at the aid station to have a bite to eat and keep on moving. Big rookie mistake, after travelling up from Hobart to Launceston, I was a bit tired and rattled and forgot to tape my nipples causing a bit of a mess at the 50k mark.

My singlet is still under a table somewhere in Heritage Forest. Thank you to the ladies who patched me up!

The day included a marathon, half marathon, quarter marathon and 5k race as well.

It was great to see everybody else out there enjoying themselves and was fantastic with the extra people out on the course.

I kept a fairly steady pace and surprised myself with how strong I felt throughout.

This win was a big surprise but was thankful that it happened.

I think I received the most beautiful trophy ever made!

The support and encouragement by Jonno, Amy, the Ultrain crew and Sole Mates running group on the day was phenomenal and made me remember why I love running so much.  The running community in Tassie is great and continues to grow and this event is a showcase for the cause.
