New FKT Editor for Australia

New FKT Editor for Australia

Kate Dzienis • December 21, 2023

australia has a new fastest known time editor, and it's aura member keelan birch

Keelan Birch, 26, has been an AURA member since 2020, and hails from Coffs Harbour in NSW. He's been running ultras for a good 7 years now and has developed a passion for the sport through his experiences in the great outdoors. Events and FKTs Keelan completed in 2023 included Coffs Hinterland Round 100km FKT, Point Lookout to Bellingen 72km FKT, Australian Regaining Champs (3rd), Grampians Peaks Trail 100mi, Hume and Hovell, and the Duval Dam Buster. Events Keelan has helped organise in 2023 - because being a participant just isn't enough! - include Washpool World Heritage Trails, Rumble In The Jungle, and the Coffs Harbour Running Festival.

Fastest Known Time is a website that lists routes and, you guessed it, the Fastest Known Time. The website allows unsupported, self-supported and supported styles in either a group or as an individual. There are hundreds of FKTs in Australia ranging from the multi-day Bibbulmun Track to single-push efforts like the Cape to Cape Track. Fastest Known Times surged in popularity in 2020 and 2021 during COVID-19 with many attempts registered each week. We caught up with Keelan Birch who is the new regional editor for the Fastest Known Time in Australia, and find out what it’s all about, and why record keeping for FKTs is vital.

How did you get into this role?

To be honest, I just sent a cold email to a contact on the website and hoped for a reply. I love the concept of FKT and have created a few routes close to Coffs Harbour. I think FKT has enormous potential to continue growing in Australia as we have so many amazing routes. This year I attempted a few FKTs and I was a bit disappointed by their processing time. It turns out that there was no regional editor for Australia and someone in America was processing them. I also saw a few FKTs pop up that were duplicates or were frankly a bit sub-standard. Clearly, it was being approved by someone who didn't know the Australian FKT scene and was time poor. So I emailed FKT and was happy to receive a response back that they were looking for someone to help with processing FKTs in Australia.

What does the role entail?

It’s a volunteer role that I only started about two weeks ago (early December 2023) but have already seen some excellent FKTs being set in Australia. On average, there are about 2-5 FKTs that hit my inbox each week. I’d love to see that reach 5-10 FKTs per week. I’m responsible for reviewing the GPX file, Strava or link, checking the time is correct (FKTs count elapsed not moving time), communicating with the athlete if needed and entering the FKT in the database. It’s not a lengthy process but an important one.

A similar process happens for when people create Routes. I think it’s important that the Route is special in some way. The FKT guidelines state ‘Not everything is an FKT Route. The route must be notable and distinct enough so that others will be interested in repeating it.’ I also tend to have pretty high standards for what would constitute an FKT route. I’d recommend that if someone is looking to run a new Route and submit it as an FKT that they submit the Route before attempting it. I would hate to not add a Route because it didn't satisfy the FKT Guidelines after someone has already run it!

Why are you a good candidate for the role?

My enthusiasm for trail running and general adventuring has given me a large amount of energy to pour into the sport. On top of my full-time work, I’m a volunteer race director with the not-for-profit Coffs Trail Runners with several ultra races listed with AURA as well as being President of the club.

I’m also President of the local orienteering club and set most of the orienteering club events. I often get asked how I find the time and energy and I think my passion for the sport is how. While I have been to UTMB and also UTA a number of times, alongside creating, promoting and organising several trail races, I love the grassroots nature of FKT the most. The idea that anyone, anytime can attempt an FKT route is just fantastic.

Usually the FKTs take you to amazing locations too. I hope that my organisational skills of being a race director and my passion for FKTs make me a good regional editor.

What do you hope to bring to this role?

I just hope by being a local contact and understanding the Australian trail running culture, I can do my bit to improve the FKT scene in Australia. I would like to see more ultra runners to put an FKT in their calendar each year as there is plenty of room to attempt both FKTs and races.

Another thing I have noticed is that there are quite a few FKTs in Australia that are lacking in description and photos on the website. I think part of my role is not only encouraging people to attempt an FKT but making sure the online information is both informative and inspiring. I’d love to see the community get more involved in FKT attempts through live tracking and social media.

For example, I think it would be awesome to see two top runners attempt an iconic point-to-point FKT at the same time but start at opposite ends which will build anticipation about who will break it. There is also plenty of potential for FKTs and FKT attempts in Australia to be better known and followed whether that is through social media or otherwise.

Overall, I hope to see more people to not only attempt an FKT, but also submit the FKT to the website.

If you know someone who has ran an FKT but it is not on the FKT website, please encourage them to submit it.

AUTRA has been in direct contact with the organisers of the Snowies Trail Run Festival, In2Adventure, regarding a recent situation involving an athlete and the event’s in‑person safety briefing requirements. In2Adventure has confirmed that the situation was discussed directly with the athlete at the time. From In2Adventure’s account, and for the purpose of clarifying the public record, AUTRA notes the following points: At no stage was the athlete prevented from breastfeeding at the event. The organiser states that the following options were offered to enable the athlete to participate while still meeting safety requirements: a quiet and private space where she could breastfeed while still being present at the briefing; the option to receive the required briefing at the 30 km start line after the start; and the option to change her registration to the 21 km event, where the briefing is conducted on the start line. At no stage prior to event registration on Saturday night did the athlete contact the organiser to advise of her situation or request alternative arrangements, which limited what could be put in place at the time. Face‑to‑face safety briefings have always been a requirement for In2Adventure events due to the remote and higher‑risk nature of the trails. AUTRA was aware that in‑person briefings were used and had not raised concerns about that general approach. The organiser has indicated that this requirement is driven by safety, duty‑of‑care and insurance obligations, and follows previous experience where remote or online briefings resulted in athletes starting events without critical safety information. The organiser maintains that the event was not conducted in a manner that was intended to be non‑inclusive, inflexible or discriminatory, and that decisions made on the day were based solely on safety requirements that apply equally to all participants. AUTRA’s aim in issuing this statement is solely to clarify the context and ensure that the public record reflects the information provided to us by the organiser.
