Governance & Compliance - Protecting The Pride Of Our Sport

Governance & Compliance - Protecting The Pride Of Our Sport

Dave Martin • September 30, 2025

As the national governing body for ultra and trail running in Australia, AUTRA is dedicated to upholding the highest standards of integrity, safety, and good governance across our sport.

This year marks a new milestone for AUTRA, with the appointment of our first governance officer. In my initial months, I have been reviewing our policy framework and working with the committee and community to build simple yet robust policies for the future. Ultra and trail running is both uncomplicated and deeply complex; at its heart, we simply love to run (or help others run) distances many consider extreme. But as our community grows, so does the responsibility to ensure our reputation remains one of fairness and honesty. That matters for everyone, but especially for those whose livelihoods are tied to the sport; Race Directors, coaches, and many others essential to our sport’s vitality in Australia.

We are privileged to share our passion in a country blessed with incredible places to run. Every time I’m out on a trail, I’m reminded how special our environment is, to use a well worn cliche, it truly feels like a lucky country.

Good governance should never be a burden. It exists to safeguard us and everyone connected to Ultra running in all its forms. It’s about ensuring that when we celebrate our achievements, whether lacing up for a run or supporting an event; our results truly mean something. I am committed to protecting that pride. I might never stand on a podium, but I want everyone who does, and everyone cheering from the sidelines, to trust in the fairness of our competitions.

This year, AUTRA is rolling out an updated governance framework to ensure we remain compliant with all legal obligations, including the Sport Integrity Australia National Integrity Framework and both Victorian and Federal legislation. Our mission is to lead by example; not just for our members and affiliated organisations, but for the whole community; ensuring our sport stays welcoming, inclusive, and safe for all.

For most, these improvements won’t mean much, if any, day-to-day change. But for those who go on to represent Australia or who earn a podium place, we want to provide full confidence that your competition, and your achievement, are beyond reproach.

Over the coming weeks and months, as new policies are approved, I’ll be keeping you informed and publishing them on our website so every member stays informed.

See you on the trails,

David Martin
AUTRA Governance Officer
